Gnathology (jaw joint & bite function)

The functional balance of the jaw joint and dentition — diagnostics and splint therapy.

A plaster bite model held in hand, labelled with a case number.

What is it?

Gnathology deals with how the jaw joint (TMJ) and the dentition work together, and with the functional balance of the bite — including diagnostics and, where needed, splint therapy.

Who is it for?

Recommended for those experiencing jaw-joint symptoms (such as clicking, pain, or limited jaw opening), teeth grinding (bruxism), or pronounced tooth wear, as well as those who need their bite stabilised before more extensive restorative work.

How does it work?

The examination begins with a clinical assessment of the bite and the jaw joint. Where needed, we make a bite-raising (occlusal) splint to relieve the joint; in more complex cases, treatment is supplemented with targeted movement therapy, involving our physiotherapy partner.

What to expect afterwards?

Your dentist will give you personalised guidance on how to wear the splint and how often to have check-ups, depending on how your condition progresses.
